Show Notes Transcript Chapter Markers

Imagine teeing off at the perfect golf spot, only to find out it's also an iconic beach house with a private beach and Tiki Hut. That's exactly what we found at Hilton Head Island, as our guest Jay Wendell from the Beach House reveals. The Beach House isn't just a golfer's paradise; it's an ideal spot for everyone, with its close proximity to Celebration Park and a slew of restaurants. It's exciting how the Beach House has transformed over the past year with exhilarating renovations and activities, and we're thrilled to share this journey with you.

Now, let's switch gears and put the spotlight on our second guest, Joe Jaspers from the Charlotte Tour. Fresh off qualifying for the US Senior Amateur, Joe brings an infectious energy about the upcoming tournament.

We dive deep into match play strategies, exploring how it differs from stroke play and how consistency and smart play can get under an opponent's skin. Drawing from his years of experience, Joe offers nuggets of wisdom like taking one less club and playing to the front edge of the green, rather than trying to hit the flag. You don't want to miss out on these valuable insights; it's like having your own personal golf guru. So grab your clubs and get ready to tee off with us!

Speaker 1:

All right, welcome back everybody. Welcome back Chris. Good to be back. I know we're going to have a lot of good discussions this episode.

Speaker 2:

We're going to have some great discussions. We got two really good guests. We've got two really good guests and Chris has started a new side hustle of being a caddy. We'll talk about that as well. Hb, I'm sorry you were the guinea pig on this one, but I'm sure he'll get better.

Speaker 1:

We'll discuss that later. Let's get on with the show.

Speaker 2:

All right, let's get started. Welcome to the Golf Week Amateur Tour of the podcast. We are your hosts, tim Newman and Chris Rocha. As the oldest and largest amateur golf tour in the country, we put on individual stroke play golf tournaments that are handicapped by flights in 48 markets across the country the Golf Week Amateur Tour, where hammers play like pros. Welcome back everybody, welcome back to especially you, chris. You had a great tournament again and you're moving right on up and you're going to be in the eighth flight here in the next month or two.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I don't know what's clicking, but something sure is and can't really complain. I've been playing some good golf, Love it. Glad to be back running tournaments and we'll see what the future holds.

Speaker 2:

To me. For you it doesn't really matter what's clicking, as long as it keeps on going. When you went out to just before your tournament in Dallas, you said you weren't putting very well, but then you went 82, 82 and you went to 79.

Speaker 1:

Last tournament, yeah just did a little tweak, a little change and been working so kind of happy with it.

Speaker 2:

Well, that's good, and we'll talk about your round with HB at the end of the show, because I got some questions for you about that, but we'll see how it goes. But anyway, we talked to Dennis McCormick a couple episodes ago and that's when he announced the housing options for national championship coming open, and we're two months away.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, it got here quicker than we expected.

Speaker 2:

Very, very quickly. So in less than two months, the islands can be flooded with a thousand plus golfers taking over courses all over Hilton Head and hotels as well. But we have a new partner that I really wanted to highlight, chris we talked a little bit about it who, in Dallas, was on as well. They're called the Beach House and they renovated the property. There's a lot of good things going on there, and so we've got the general manager to actually come on and talk to us about it. Please welcome Jay Wendell from the Beach House. Jay, welcome, bud.

Speaker 3:

Hey, thanks Tim. Thanks, Chris, Excited to be here.

Speaker 2:

No problem, welcome. So, jay, why don't you give us a little bit of a background on the Beach House and what you all have done to the property over the last year or so?

Speaker 3:

Sure, absolutely so. Well, first and foremost, we're excited to welcome players from the national championship and their families, and you know I've had the opportunity to work with Dennis McCormick over the years His former properties as well, so certainly excited to get him and your players back here to the hotel. Beach House is. You know, it's iconic to Hillman Island. We've got Tiki Hut here. We've got live music every day. We've recently renovated our guest room corridors, our guest rooms. We're actually renovated just a couple of years ago and we've got more exciting things coming in the future with a new pool and expanding the Tiki Hut and such. So it's just a great spot. You know we say toes in the sand. I mean literally you step off our Tiki Hut and you're on our private beach overlooking Caligni, and it's just a great place for families and for to relax and enjoy and get out there and enjoy all Hillt Matt asked off.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, and Chris, you know I don't know if you've ever been down that way, but the Tiki Hut is known across the island as one of the best places to go. I mean, like Jay said, there's live music all the time. It's literally right on the beach. It's, you know, what you see in movies. You know, like Tiki Bars. It's right here, right outside the hotel, right outside, right on the beach. It's a great place to go listen to music, have fun, have a few drinks and just kind of kick back.

Speaker 3:

Nice For sure, and then there's more to offer to him too. I mean, our location is just, it's unmatched. I mean we're basically in the heart of Hillt Matt Island, you know. We've got Coligny right across the street, so shopping in multiple restaurants. We have our porch restaurant here on property. Celebration Park is right across the street, so great activities and opportunities for kids and you know, there's seems like there's a festival or something going on every week over there, tuesday nights, I believe right now is Jazz Jazz at the park, so they're celebrating that over there. It's just, it's a great location. Once you, once you pull into the hotel, you don't have to get into your car again unless you're going to, unless you're heading to a golf course to compete in a national championship.

Speaker 1:

That's awesome. I was just about to ask where you guys were located on the island. Funny thing is, to you know, been going to be my fifth year going. I don't think I've stepped one foot on the beach because we're so busy, but I mean to be able to just walk onto the beach. You know, it was a great location for our golfers to bring their significant others to have something to do while they're trying to compete for a national championship.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, and being down, including, like, like Jay says, you don't, you don't have to, you park your car.

Speaker 2:

You don't have to go anywhere Again, unless you're playing golf and you need to get in your car to go to the course. But you know you could rent bikes down there and and literally the bike, the bike trails around the island. You know somebody told me this a few weeks ago how many miles are it's, it's, it's incredible how much, how much bike path there there is all over the island and you can literally go, you can, you can see the whole line, whole island, on your bike. So you don't again, you don't have to to get your car, unless you want to take your clubs around. But you know your families can, can rent bikes and and ride all over the place. And you know Jay said there's a park there and Jay, I don't know if you know, you know this, but you know there's a big festival coming in in September as well and I forget what it was, but my wife told me about it this morning. It's the 360, 40 something.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, the 360 40 celebration. Actually, there's a. A singer songwriter festival is basically part of that celebration and it's I think it's called Island Jam it actually. It actually kicks off here at Artikehead on the Thursday. I think that's the 14th, I believe it's the 1415, 16th and then I think it's done, on the 17th. So we'll actually have three sessions. On Thursday night we'll put a stage on our beach, we'll have three different groups of three singer songwriters that will get up there and just jam and they'll kind of banter back and forth. It's going to be super fun. There's a big act for closing at that park right across the street on that Saturday. So it's an inaugural year for the singer songwriter fest and it's it's been brought to us by BMI, so it's it's pretty exciting, if you know. You know, if you've heard of the singer song fest down in Key West that's promoted by BMI. So we're hoping this really continues to grow. It should be a lot of fun, tim.

Speaker 2:

Well, that's great. I didn't know it was kicking off right there at the Tiki. And again, Chris, that's how, how phenomenal this place is and you know, I saw the list of you know who the big act is, which is somebody that I like a lot, but anyway, it's, it's controlled a lot of people. And again, start right here at the Tiki, at the beach house. That's pretty cool.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, and the good news is is you know our bands stop at 10 o'clock. You know we certainly have rooms that we can. We could put our players in because I know they've got to get up early, they got to get the rest that keep them away from any of the music. But then for those that want that, right at the backstage, I've got ocean front rooms that put them right on top of the band and I have people that return every year that just love those specific rooms. Matter of fact, they get upset if they don't get their specific room their room Exactly, but that's awesome.

Speaker 1:

I'm looking on, you know, our national website. Is that pretty good deal actually, from what it says here 189 for Deluxe to Queen guest room you know it looks like it has a bunch of different amenities, things like that. So if you're looking at going, you know, and you want to bunk with somebody, that's definitely a great deal to take a look at.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, as I said in that episode with Dennis, you know if this is where I would stay, you know if you're not. You know getting a house with your buddies, this is the place to be because, again, you're right there where everything's happened. When you're done golf, you come back, park your car again. Restaurants, tiki Hut, swim Pool, beach shopping, whatever it is that you want to do, it's all right there.

Speaker 3:

No, we were excited to get Dennis over here to see the HAL, I think you know the hotel became an independent about a year ago, year and a half ago, and we actually got new owners and that are really ready to invest some major dollars into the property, even greater than what it is today. You know we actually just won a nice award. I haven't paid for the advertising yet so I can't mention the name, but let's just say it's a big travel magazine but we were the number one beachfront hotel on Hilton Head and we had some really strong competition with that. You know, two others actually placed and that was actually best resorts of the South in that category. So pretty amazing stuff. So what we have today. We still take great care of our guests. I'll point that out to you.

Speaker 2:

And Jay, I can attest to that. I was at the hospitality event that you all did at the Heritage, and Chris sent you some pictures when I told you about Top Notch it was, it was phenomenal, it was a great time. It took great care of us, the food was great, the beer was cold. It was great. Jay, it was a great time and again, I appreciate you having us.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, and it was great to have you up there, and we'll don't tell anybody, Tim, but we'll do it again this year. That sounds good to me.

Speaker 2:

That sounds good to me, Jay. What else can you tell us about the property? I know you've got some great offers out there. Not, maybe, not necessarily for national championship, but yeah, I'll tell you you know we're always running promotions.

Speaker 3:

I mean right now I've got one going called Pick your Freebie and we give you four choices. You pay the best available rate and you can pick one of four options. To just add on Could be a room upgrade, it could be a $25 food and beverage credit, or we'll waive with a resort fee. You just pick one. You know we've got another promotion going on. Back to school.

Speaker 3:

We have this iconic lunchbox that we serve our food in at Tiki Hut. People actually take them home and we see them on eBay for sale all the time. But so now we're gonna, we're gonna give with that room rate. We'll give them a Tiki lunchbox and it's old school, right. It takes you right back to when you were a kid. You know, waiting for the school bus holding onto your metal lunchbox. But and it's branded Tiki and you know we've always got something going on here and there's always a great deal out there. Triple A we're friends with, you know it's. You know our value at the hotel. I think is one of the best around and you know we're smaller 200 rooms so it feels cozy and it's just a great spot. And I've worked and lived on Hilton Head for 11 years and I'm really excited to be here at the hotel and the beach house and it's just a lot of great opportunity. And again, like I said, I wish national championship very good luck.

Speaker 2:

But, jay, thank you so much for spending some time with us and you know, I'm sure that you're gonna get a rush of reservations, if you haven't already. Hopefully they'll be coming, you know, in the next couple of weeks and I appreciate all you do for us and look forward to this partnership as we move forward.

Speaker 3:

Absolutely Well. Thanks, tim. Thanks for having me. Chris and Chris, good luck in the tournament and, Tim, we'll see you soon. Sounds good, bud. Take care, take care everybody.

Speaker 2:

So, chris, it was great talking with Jay. You know, with the renovations that they've done at the beach house and you know some of the events that they've got coming up, especially the. You know we talked about the music festival that's coming there in September, and then our national championship. You know being a, you know, one of our host hotels for national championship. Anybody to say there's is really gonna have a good time Again, remember, it's down in Caligny. You don't have to go anywhere except for to the course. I mean you can walk to restaurants. They've got live music every night. They're shopping, there's a park for the kids, there's a beach. It's got pretty much everything that you would want.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, it was a great conversation. Probably gonna be the place that I'm gonna stay at this year. But I mean they just, you know, a walk to the beach is always nice, especially for taking your families. So you know, get registered or get a reservation as quickly as possible, cause if they sell out, then now you're looking at other options that aren't gonna be as price pleasing as you would hope for.

Speaker 2:

Now as price pleasing. War is much fun, so have you made your reservation yet?

Speaker 1:

I have not yet Will soon just trying to finalize and see who's actually going from the tour and if we're gonna do a house or not. So you know, those kinds of things have to be planned out first, but if not, if there's not enough, then I'll definitely recommend this to start with.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, so anybody who wants to go ahead and make a reservation, you can find all the information you know on the Ashland Championship website. It's you're not gonna beat this it's $189 a night. They're waiving the $25 a night resort fee and so you're not gonna be able to find a place on the island, a hotel on the island, for that, especially, you know, for the location and the other amenities that you're gonna be able to get.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, that saves. You know, if you're looking at a week, you know almost 200 bucks it'll save Exactly.

Speaker 2:

So let's talk about our next guest. This guy is. You know. To say he's a legend on tour is a would be an understatement. He's won the tour championship six times. He just played in an event, a North Carolina State event. We'll talk about that with him. Tied for a second with his partner was Jim Autry, who's also a golf week national champion. So let's welcome Joe Jaspers from the Charlotte Tour. Joe, welcome, bud. Thanks for having me. Thank you so much for taking your time. I know you're busy. You've got a lot going on and, you know, one of the reasons why we wanted to talk to you is, you know, you just qualified for the US senior amateur which is coming up in a couple of weeks. So congratulations on that as well.

Speaker 4:

Thank you. I'm really excited, looking forward to it. They've got a great venue lined up for us out in late hour.

Speaker 2:

I can think of a lot worse places to go, you know, for a week in the end of August but, you know, we'll get to that in just a second.

Speaker 2:

I do want to talk about, you know, your event this past week. You know you played in the North Carolina State four ball, tied for second with Jim Maltry, and you know so. You played three rounds and as I was looking at your scores, you shot 1400 for three days 68, 68, 66. And you know you're only three shots off the lead and the team that won they've also won the. You know the four ball that's done in rural beach, I think once or twice as well, is what Dennis had told me. So you know golf week was really represented well this past week in North Carolina.

Speaker 4:

Yeah, there are a lot of good. You know senior level players that show up there from all across. You know the state of North Carolina, so it's a yeah, it's some tough competition.

Speaker 2:

And you know I mentioned to you offline here about some of your statistics and for those of you that don't know, joe's pretty good. Not only is he one of the national champion golf week, national championship six times, he's qualified for a number of USGA events. And you know when I pull up your stats, joe, I mentioned to you over 19 rounds just this year. You're only plus three over 19 competitive rounds but I'm plus three on one hole.

Speaker 2:

So you know it's just incredible and that's kind of what we're talking about. You know, in golf week we've got, you know, people like Joe, people like HB, people like Jim Altree, and then all the way up to and I'm gonna call out my buddy, the master chief who shoots. You know, 120, 125, you know every time he comes out, but so there's a place for everybody. But Joe, really with you, you've been doing this for so long. How long have you been a member of the tour?

Speaker 4:

Oh boy, I think it's probably been. It's probably been at least 25 years that we're in there. Yeah, it was a late, late. They had the late nineties when I started playing. They were really good players. You know back then as well. You know it's not that they've just shown up recently. You have to you get out there in the golf week tour. You better be ready to go, because there were sharks out there in Champlight.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, and Charlotte comes. I mean the Charlotte tour has, you know, historically one of the strongest Champlights in the nation. I mean, you've always got somebody from Charlotte coming out. Who's strong, who's you know, one top leader board at national championship, whether it's you, whether it's Jim, whether it's Jay Barnes, whether it's you know, we can go right on down the list you know of the strong Champlight players.

Speaker 4:

I think I mean that's what makes the tour a lot of fun and what makes it great is that there's it's a high level of competition and it prepares you well for the state events or USGA events. It keeps you sharp, you know when you go to play and those things. But it's, I mean it's just it's a lot of fun, a lot of good guys, a lot of good friendships over the years. I mean it's, it's a lot of fun.

Speaker 2:

So let's talk about your. Your qualifying round on August 2nd at the High Point Country Club. You shot 69, you tied for first. So you, you know you were safe all the way in. Tell me about that round.

Speaker 4:

I mean it was one of the more solid rounds I'd played this year. It was pretty consistent. It was. You know it wasn't overly eventful in terms of I started out pretty quick. You know I birdie the chipped in on the first hole for birdie and missed a couple of good birdie opportunities the next three holes and then, you know, kind of just went along for a while. I mean the only the part of the course around 12 and run 12, 13, 14 is where I struggled a little bit but my short game really, you know, stepped up and I was able to make some good par saves to keep their momentum going.

Speaker 2:

So it looks like you par 12, birdie 13 and bogey 14. So you're 200 200 on the front, one under, on the back, you know for that 69, three under.

Speaker 4:

Yeah, I had a few Was it was a 12, I bogey.

Speaker 3:

I think yeah.

Speaker 4:

No or 12. Yeah, but 12. Yeah, 12. I, you know, made a good par save. I hit my t, shot in the water, took a drop and knocked it up about 12, 15 feet and made, made a par save there. So that was crucial there. And then, you know, hit three good shots on the next hole, made birdie and then 14 made kind of a strategic error off the tee. I didn't really pick the right line, hit it in the left bunker there and I still had about a five footer for par and missed that. But but that was really the only place in the round. That little stretch right there is about the only area that I know struggled a little bit.

Speaker 2:

So you just mentioned, you made a strategic error in terms, of course, management. Is that something that you think that you know is something that the mid to high handicapper should probably do a better job of, instead of you know, just trying to? You know aim the flags and hit driver and those types of things all the time?

Speaker 4:

Oh, absolutely. I mean it keeps you from making a big number. I mean, you know, I always tell people if you can get to the 150 posts. You know you can play from there, but you got to be in the fairway, you know. And then there are certain holes and I think playing down in Hilton had all these years and the national championship really taught me to think strategically and play from point to point, because you can't just go out there and just rip it and hit it anywhere. You'll be in a world of hurt. So it kind of teaches you to be patient.

Speaker 4:

And you know, hit a three wood instead of a driver. I think you know out there, island Creek, you know where the setup was I hit my driver twice all day. That's it, wow. Because my three wood would put me in position. So you know why bring all the trouble into play. You know there's no reason to. I'm just saying it's probably kind of boring golf sometimes, but but it, you know, when it comes out of the counting strokes and trying to score, that that's the name of the game.

Speaker 2:

I'll take boring golf all day long, if you know, if I can you know, shoot even far or three under every time.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I completely agree. You know, I try to do the same thing. I like how you mentioned the 150 posts, because I wish every course had those. It makes it a lot easier to know. You know, if you have a strong club 150 in, you're into the center of the green, you're putting for birdie at least. So that's a great, great advice to give.

Speaker 4:

Yeah, my dad, when I was a little young, he, he gave me some good advice. He said, joe, just you know, swing easy and just aim for the middle of the green, you'll do. You know, from there it's easy. You know. I didn't listen. Probably for another 20 or 30 years Swing easy, so it's stuck with me.

Speaker 2:

So and you know, joe, I'm glad you brought that up to swing easy, because I've seen you play a senior swing and it's effortless. And I compare that to me I'm gripping the club so fricking tight and I'm swinging so hard, the ball doesn't go anywhere and, and I mean your, your, your swing is almost effortless. It's just amazing to watch you swing and watch the ball come off your club and, and, and you know anybody, that's really good. It's to be able to watch that, as opposed to you know some of the things that a lot of us, you know really bad amateurs do.

Speaker 4:

Well, it sounds like you play. You swing in the golf club like I play racquetball you know, it hit as hard as I can to run around like a chick with a hiccup.

Speaker 2:

That's what you do, I guess.

Speaker 4:

Yeah, but no, I mean it's yeah, I mean it's really, it's really bad. I mean everybody's got a different tempo and how they swing the club. Some are faster, slower. I mean you got to, you got to find your own. You know every. You know, even if you watch for pros, every swing is unique. They don't, they don't all look like Adam Scott. He's the, he's the, actually the abnormal one you know out of the group. But uh, yeah, it's just finding, finding your tempo and trying to stick with it and then that helps you repeat the swing.

Speaker 2:

So you've got, you've got the. You've seen your amateur in two weeks. What's your, what's your plan? Or you know what's your schedule, like you know again, you're two weeks out between now and when you get there. What's your, what's your general? You know preparation, like like.

Speaker 4:

Well, I'm going to head out there. There's a practice round Thursday and Friday. Uh, the tournament starts Saturday. The stroke play part Saturday and Sunday. So I'll get out there late Wednesday and then probably Thursday afternoon play a practice round and then, I think, probably Friday morning, you know, a second practice round in um and really when I go to the practice round I'm not really concerned about how well I hit it. You know, I don't even keep score. It's just, you know, trying to figure out where your your misses are and you know where you can be aggressive.

Speaker 2:

So for this, do um. Do you have a caddy, or is it just you?

Speaker 4:

Um, I don't know that. I have a caddy. The nice thing about senior golf is you get to use golf carts, oh, okay, um, so you don't have to walk. And then that, and frankly to you know to walk as you go through it, you know it's, it can be up to a week of golf. You know walking every day. I'm not sure my my body would hold up my knees especially, so it, yeah, so I, I'm right now I don't have a caddy. I don't know that I'll get a caddy unless I discover there's some things about the course makeup that I, you know, get one while I'm out there. But yeah, I think one of the the challenges for us is going to be the. It's the elevation, um, because I think the elevation is very similar to, like Denver, colorado, yep, so the ball will carry a little further. So that that's probably going to take a little bit to get used to.

Speaker 1:

It's easy to get used to Trust me.

Speaker 4:

Okay, as long as you can hit it further. I guess that makes it easier. I, I lose.

Speaker 1:

I lose so much yardage going from from El Paso to Hilton head sea level. It's it, I can take. I can take six clubs total on the putter and be okay, um, but out here, you know I'm hitting irons into greens and it's nice to have that iron filling instead of a hybrid going in. So I think you'll enjoy. You'll enjoy the elevation a lot better.

Speaker 4:

Yeah, yeah, as long as I don't get distracted by all the great views, all the scenery. That's the tough part.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, Look at the pictures. I mean it's uh, it's beautiful, so it looks awesome. It really does.

Speaker 4:

It looks awesome, yeah yeah. So two years ago I qualified. We went to Detroit, so that was actually the. The facility and everything there was was great as well. You know um, but not the same views as you'll you'll get out at Lake Tahoe.

Speaker 2:

I guess Not many people or not not many places are going to have those those types of wonderful views. How many other USGA events have you qualified for?

Speaker 4:

Um, this is the uh sixth one. Um, yeah, the the one. Uh, my good friend Jim Motry and I qualified for the USGA four ball in the in the COVID year, so that one actually got scrapped. So we qualify. So I counted as part of the six but we did unfortunately didn't get to play, so it's been a three uh, three mid-ams, two senior AMs and then the USGA four ball.

Speaker 2:

That's, that's amazing. You know, I don't know. Do you know Don Miller, who plays out of the upstate tour? Yeah, he qualified as an alternate for this year too.

Speaker 4:

Oh, fantastic, fantastic.

Speaker 2:

Um, you know, as I was, you know, preparing for this, I just kind of went through the uh, usga has a list of of all the places and all the qualifiers and all the alternates, and that's all his name. He actually played up in New York.

Speaker 4:

Yeah, oh, wow, okay, he kind of threw me off for a little bit, but but yeah.

Speaker 2:

So I mean we're again, we're doing pretty good.

Speaker 4:

I tell you, I tell people, I say sometimes I think it's harder to get in, you know, through the qualifiers than once you actually get there. I mean all the players are good when you get there, but you know, you basically got to be in the top, you know. I mean we had four spots, which was one more than usual up here where I was at, but usually it's only a couple and you know, it's kind of a, it's kind of a pass fail. You win or lose, you know Right, you know you win the tournament or you're out.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, that's what was. Was was for Don. They had one winner and two all turns. Oh wow.

Speaker 4:

Okay, yeah, so that's, I mean that's, that's a tough that's a tough road oh there. I mean it says an 18-hole shootout and you got to be medallist.

Speaker 2:

That's yeah, that's, that's wow, that's it. So when you, when you go out there and play, you know what's your mentality in terms of you know because, like you said, you've got to the stroke play and then you get after that that it's a, it's match play what's your mentality during you know the the first two rounds.

Speaker 4:

The first two rounds is really. I mean, a lot of pars will get you through to the match play so you don't have to shoot a super low score. I mean, if you got a day and things are going your way, you'll, you know, just keep pushing as far as you can. But you know, the big thing, I think, the first two days is stay away from a big numbers. You know if you can stay away from double bogies and you know worse, you know then, I think you know you'll, you'll play well enough to get through to the stroke or the match play. So I mean, you know, the first to the first two days. I mean, you know, it's not that you don't win at the first two days, I mean you just got to get into match play and then anything can happen.

Speaker 2:

Do you like playing match play?

Speaker 4:

You know it's really different because I haven't, the only time I've played match play really is, you know, during the mid Ams and obviously the senior Am, but it it really it is a different animal. And then you've got to, you know, and in match play you've got to go out and, just you know, be aggressive. You can't, you know you can try to make pars all day long but eventually it's going to come back to bite you because there's just so many good players and you know, I don't care if you're two or three up on somebody with you know nine holes to play, it can evaporate really quick because it's really a momentum. You know it's momentum back and forth when you're going to go and match play head to head.

Speaker 2:

So but it is fun and I just I just got to figure. A player like you could really frustrate other players because you know you're so consistent and in your swaying and where you put the ball, yeah I mean it's it's pretty much always going right where you want it to go and you're you're always getting a good score. I just kind of see you kind of getting in. You know your your opponent's head from that perspective.

Speaker 4:

Well, yeah, I, you know. I think the thing is is you know you don't want to give anybody a hole, so you know you want to make them have to make birdies to beat you and the amazing thing is you get up to higher, higher levels. You know you can think, you know a guy hits a shot and he's in terrible shape, and you know you cannot let your guard down till that hole's done, because all these guys and you get there, their short games are really good. Um, so you know, did they may look like they're in jail to the short-sighted. I mean, look at Jeff Wong, you know every, you know he hit the shot. I think he's in trouble. All of a sudden you know, hey, good par, yeah.

Speaker 2:

So, joe, I tell a story you know pretty often. You know, okay, I guess it's probably 10 years ago, um, I was, I was sabbatical for my job and I went out to to Phoenix to to do some work and I got a membership at a club and every Sunday they, they did a skins game for all the the many tour players. And I got in the skins game, not knowing I mean knowing I'm not going to make any money, but I just wanted to be able to play with them and watch them. And these guys could hit the ball a ton. I mean we'd just blow in the ball, I mean over top the green, um, but they couldn't chip and putt. And I would, they would, they would talk. Well, I got to go to the range by swings, bad like no guys. You got to go over to the chip and area. You got to, you got to go learn how to putt, you know, and at any rate, you know the good players can chip and putt.

Speaker 4:

Yeah, it's because you don't give strokes back, you know. I mean, you're not. You know you make a birdie or two birdies If you don't have a lot of birdies in a day, if you don't, if you're not making a lot of bogies, you're not giving strokes back. And that it's, and a lot of it too. It's just being strategic about making sure you don't miss it in certain places. You know, um, and you pay attention where the pin is, and it's it's. You know, because they tell you don't get above the hole. Don't get above the hole. You know it's not rocket science, but you know, do you take one less club and then play to the front edge instead of trying to hit to the flight, chris?

Speaker 1:

Oh yeah, I'm taking notes.

Speaker 2:

Joe, joe, chris. Chris is getting a lot better, so he's. He's been from from the sea flight to the end of last year and now he's right on the cusp of going to the A flight. He's playing really well, yeah.

Speaker 4:

Wow, that's a big move yeah.

Speaker 1:

And we moved into a house where I converted the garage to a hitting area, just a net and a mat and you know getting there at least half an hour a day, just kind of work on a technique here or there, work on chipping. Um, I mean, now I'm seeing it paid off, so it's, it's been a big jump. Um, can't wait to see what happens. But no, I I completely agree with what you're saying. You know, I've kind of tried to look at the course differently and and see what, what I can do as far as just getting onto the green and not having to worry about chipping as much as I don't need to, if I can just get on there in the center of the green.

Speaker 4:

Yeah, and that's I mean the you know, your, your example, you know in your situation is what I think makes the the golf week tour so awesome, is that is I mean to see guys over the years progress from you know C to B to A and then go to Champlain. I mean it's, it's really it's, it's fun to watch.

Speaker 4:

I mean it's and it's a mate in that and being in that competitive environment, you know people go on and work at it and you know it's just it's. I think that's one of the cool aspects of the golf league tour.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, it's been a blast. You know, I've been on tour I want to say almost nine, 10 years director for my fifth season. So it's, I've seen the changes and you know, being a director, you get to see a bunch of other people, um, meet a bunch of people like HB Tim, you know, but even some friends that have joined and have gotten way better. So it's, it's like I said, it's a great place, you know, if you want to take it serious to, to get better and meet a lot of people.

Speaker 2:

So, Joe, do you have any advice for for the um, the rest of the of the tour, who is not the elite golfer like you, on what they should be doing better to, to, to get better.

Speaker 4:

I think, more than anything, just practice. I mean, I don't, I don't get to play. You know I don't play three or four days a week typically. Um, but I too, my goal is to get to the range twice a week, and when I get home there's a you know up the road as a golf course and I uh, if I stopped buying and just go putt for 15, 20, 20 minutes and I can do that If I can't hit balls, if I can do that two or three days a week over time, it's amazing how much more consistent you get. You know, putting that kind of thing or even short game.

Speaker 2:

I think some people their minds just probably exploded here that you don't, you don't, you don't play that much and you only get into the range twice a week.

Speaker 4:

Well, I mean like, oh well, I work like everybody else. So you know, I wish I get out, I mean the this week played in the, in the four ball I played, you know, monday, tuesday, wednesday that's not, you know that's not a normal occurrence, unfortunately, but yeah, so I mean it's. You know, this week, yeah, I mean typically this week, next week I'll probably, you know, play a couple of times, but I'll, I'll just spend some time practicing a little bit and then that's where, in the practice, where you dig out all the, that's where you finally, you know, you kind of you just got to go practice and sometimes you know I'll put for 15, 20 minutes and hit it terrible until I finally kind of figure it out and it's just going through that process. You got to dig through and chip off all the garbage and you finally find the, the thing that you can do consistently. It's just, but sometimes you just got to do it two or three days a week for 15, 20 minutes.

Speaker 2:

Like Chris is in his garage.

Speaker 4:

Exactly, exactly. Yeah, that's how you go from B to B to A.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, you know you just have to click so just everyone be be be aware.

Speaker 2:

Well, make sure you practice putting too.

Speaker 1:

Chris, that, yeah, that's my Achilles, heel right there Right now.

Speaker 4:

Yeah, let's get a long putter. Let's work in for the bros.

Speaker 2:

Joe, thanks so much for taking some time with us and we wish you the best of luck in here in a couple of weeks, and we'll be watching.

Speaker 4:

All right, thanks, appreciate it. I'll try to make that golf lead group proud you always do.

Speaker 1:

Yes, you already have. Don't even worry about it, take care. Thanks, you know, tim, I've heard all the stories of Joe Jasper. You know, national champion winner, great golfer. I never realized how great of a golfer he is until we had that conversation and he just seems like a very humble guy, you know, willing to just talk to anybody about golf, and we wish him the best of luck in his his tournament up there. You know we will be watching and you know it's such a great interview. It's just such a great conversation to have and good tips that I've personally taken into my golf game and seen it flourish. So hopefully, you know, our listeners take that advice and use it for themselves as well.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, as good of a golfer as Joe is he's that you know twice that. As good of a person, nice, down to earth, easy to talk to, easy to get along with everybody. You know couldn't, couldn't ask for a better representative for the tour than Joe. And you know he he did get some great advice. And if you, if you ever watch him play you know I've seen him play a lot you know you're there, his swing is so smooth he's. He's really Mr consistent and you know when he talks about, you know, the course management. I think that's one of one of his, his big strengths of of his game.

Speaker 2:

You know he, he knows where he wants to put the ball and he puts it there. It's really that simple.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, at that level you need to be that disciplined to be able to do that and not just try to get as close as you can, find a distance that works for you and being able to create these shots. You know I got to see that a lot this past week with HB and just getting into watch other A and champ fight players that I have on my tour. They make it look so effortless. But you know it takes a lot of practice and thinking on the course to be able to get that goal accomplished?

Speaker 2:

Yeah, absolutely, you know, and you know, like I said, Joe qualified is a for the US senior AM. We also had a another tour member qualify as an alternate and that's as Don Miller out of the upstate tour. So congratulations to him. Not sure if he's actually going to get in yet, but he qualifies as a second alternate. Yes, we've done from a tour perspective. We've done really well this year with the Brian qualifying for the US senior open and that would show and Don. So they've had some really good representatives of the tour.

Speaker 1:

Yes, I mean we've seen that, you know, in the last month or so of members qualifying for different things or attempting to qualify. So it's good to see that we have a good showing out there and, you know, maybe it'll help get our names out there. But, most importantly, we wish the best of luck for all of them that are qualifying for these big events.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, we could have had, you know, with a fourth couple weeks ago. Here we go and HB got a bless you. But I mean I know you've got a big heart, you're nice and all, but I'm not sure. I'm not sure how this round actually went. Yeah, as I look at the scorecard, I'm not sure if Chris was giving you the right clubs, giving you the right distances, reading Pudge's career or whatever, but you were five over through the first three holes.

Speaker 1:

Hold on, hold on, hold on. Let's start with this. We started in the back nine, okay, so we were even par through five, two birdies, two bogies. Ended the front nine to under Okay, and then that's when you got. You got mad at you, we got in some trouble.

Speaker 1:

No, no we got in trouble off the tee, off one win. So so we played Midland Country Club and if anyone's ever been to Midland Texas, it's flat, so there's nothing to block the wind. So if you get in an area where there is a bunch of wind you need to control the ball very well. And on hole one he flew a bunker that should have stopped the ball from going to the desert. Hopefully I found it got a little trouble, didn't have such a great hole. Two, I think we missed. We missed the putt, you know, just a mental error. And then three, the wind caught the ball. Again, it's a par three and it went into this little pond that I wish was empty, right next to the green. So those three holes, you know they were a little struggle, but we got back on the tracks and finished strong, which was what was nice.

Speaker 1:

One thing I learned and if you know, if HB, if he, would love to have me back, I definitely would do it in the heartbeat. But one thing I learned is this event with the way the Texas heat was have we've been having lately, they allowed caddies to ride golf cart, to take the clubs to each ball and only the caddies could ride. We were, you know we did it so we can take extra water, this and that. But I think that took away from the element of us being able to talk on the way up to the ball and I think I think that could have hurt us a little bit. But he was plus three and to qualify you need to be minus one, so there's only four shots off. Take that as a plus.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, that's, that's where I was going to get to. I mean, so you're just, you're plus five for three holes, and you and you finished plus three, plus three, you know so so again, I mean he.

Speaker 1:

I would say he's a good car.

Speaker 2:

Is that what it was?

Speaker 1:

Six yeah, six birdies, yeah, six birdies. So I mean, you know there was some some mental mental lapses we had on the drive home. It's a four hour drive, so it's only a time to think about what happened. I think you know one hole he he tapped his ball on accident on putting, took a penalty stroke there and we could have just kind of seen if maybe it was an incidental contact and just placed the ball back. You know, but at that point that was right after the double and I think we just had that mental lapse. So things that that.

Speaker 1:

You know this is the second time I've done this for him Again. I would do it again in a heartbeat for anybody on my tour that needed a caddy. You know, at some point these guys are so good that there's only so much you can say. You know you're really there to just confirm shots. If they have any questions, get the yardage for them. So they're not. You know they have so much on their mind already to relieve two, three, four different things off of them. Is is good, but it's also it's a partnership that that me and him can also build together and I I don't see him missing that many cuts in the near future and who knows what, what, what the future holds for him.

Speaker 2:

I know he's going to do great things, but I know he's a good player and he's and he's going to do great. My question is is he going to ask you back?

Speaker 1:

That I haven't asked yet. We've just played here and there. The next, the next qualifier that I that I know he he's going to do. If he, if he goes out there and play, you know, to get closer, I'll ask him. We'll see what happens. I know there's a, there's a, there's a handful of guys that are, you know, chopping up the bid to to caddy for him. So we'll see what happens. Maybe it'll be a draw on, not of a hat type thing.

Speaker 1:

But he did qualify for the Texas Am, though didn't he Is that what you said, and and luckily that event is at the same course that we just played. So you know. Let me backtrack real quick. He's he went plus three right With no practice ground. That was the first time he saw the course, because the course closes on Monday and the qualifier was on Tuesday. So you know, now that he's seen the course and kind of knows what what can happen, I don't think he's going to have a problem at the Texas Am Jolie should qualify for something there.

Speaker 2:

And he obviously you know I'm giving you a hard time, but we know he's a good player. Yeah, I mean that's a he's a great player, I mean, there's no doubt about that. So again, hb, we wish you the best. Just make better life choices. When, when, when, picking your your caddy, please. Thanks, thanks I do I do what I can. I do what I can I do.

Speaker 1:

I'm glad. I'm glad you got a kick out of it. Well, I was driving home in in silence for a good two hours of the four Wow and, and we drove separate cars too. That's probably a good thing.

Speaker 2:

You know I'm, I'm Chris, you know I'm just, I'm just messing with you. You know the the very first thing I saw. You know when I saw the. You know when, when you pull up the site, you see his final score and you don't, you don't really know what that, what that looks like, until you, you know, until you pull up the. You know the hole by hole, right and to me. You shouldn't tell anybody you started on the on the back. Tell them you started off on the front. You know you started five over and you recovered to finish three over, which is really pretty strong. Well, I'm, I know for sure it's gonna be one final record at six, uh, two more laps. Before you know I'm finishing six months in four of my courses. Oh, so great.

Speaker 1:

I can see that too, but that's what I was doing for and that's, that's what I was thinking.

Speaker 2:

Wow, he started, he started five over, double bogey, double five over. And then right, actually he's six over one point, right, if you, if you look at it from the front, if you start on the whole one, yep, so you're six over, five over, six over again, so you've, you've, and then to to really only to finish it three over at. That's that's a really good recovery and that show that's a side of a good right, right he's, he can get back on the tracks, and right.

Speaker 1:

I mean, we finished on a on a birdie. I think it ended up being like a three foot tap in birdie, which was great because I only had to pull the flag for a little while and put it back in for the car.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, yeah, that's good out of here. Has let's run. Um, no, I, I have a great time doing it and I would do it for anybody that that ass. So you know, if it's not HP, if anybody's out there listening, and then you have catty, hit me up. We give my email out there, we'll make it work yeah, we'll put the email out.

Speaker 2:

No, oh, my goodness. Well, I'm glad you're home for a little bit. You know we've got a tournament that it lands got torn at place called shim the oaks, and let me just tell you about this place here. We've been coming here for a few years and it's, it's kind of grown um, it's kind of middle of nowhere, but you know we've got, uh, they've, they've got sweets so you can stay on property. You know you don't have to, you don't have to drive anywhere. That's got. It's got a bar, it's got a restaurant where we're, we're, we're stage out of. It's a another little separate or private bar restaurant area with two simulators in it. The course is phenomenal. So this, this is a really good, it's a, it's a really good venue. It's, you know, it's becoming one of my favorites here here in Atlanta. So if anybody is ever interested in coming, coming down and playing with us, this is a.

Speaker 1:

This is a tournament that you should probably target for next year yeah, I've already been getting a list ready to go on events to, to go to um, so I'll have to put that one on there. Maybe it'll be a just a me and the wife trip, a weekend trip, kind of get her out of the heat. It will pass so.

Speaker 2:

I'm not sure that the heat of Atlanta would be much better you'd be surprised.

Speaker 1:

You would be surprised, I'm sorry.

Speaker 2:

I'm sorry just to stay inside. Well, well, in jury weekend off, if anybody has. You know we're gonna talk to Roger next time and you know I send him an article that I saw that about a rule that I had. It made my head hurt just trying to read and trying to figure it out. I don't know if you got a chance to read that yet, but I couldn't make heads or tails of what he was doing or trying to trying to do what the ruin is. So hopefully Roger can can feel a signal on that one.

Speaker 1:

I'm looking forward to that next week, yeah yeah, it'll be a good, a good rules to look at. I mean, if anybody has actually heard his, his episodes and have used his rules to your advantage or has helped you in the situation, let us know as well. We like to hear those success, success stories, so we we know what you know, if it's working or not, because our goal with him is to enlighten everybody on the rules and some rules that he's mentioned that I didn't even know about. Like you know, mark mark in the ball for an opponent to kind of help with pace of play. I didn't know we were able to do that, but I know it's helped now and remembering that you have to place that ball back, which was brilliant in itself right, yeah, so if you have any questions for us or worrying, if you you want us to to highlight, highlight a person, another golfer rule, whatever that is.

Speaker 2:

But you know, please choose an email and you can email me at Tim and ATC at amateur golf tour, net and Chris at El Paso at amateur golf tour net but hope you enjoy your weekend off, stay inside, stay cool, have fun with the kids and we'll talk to you soon.

Speaker 1:

You have a good time out. You have a good time out there as well. Let me know how it goes. We'll do, but oh too as well.
